Canetti, Elias: Het geweten in woorden
Bundel essays geschreven tussen 1962 en 1974. Veel profielen van schrijvers. Prachtig hoofdstuk over het schrijven van dagboeken versus notities versus agenda. Tegendraads, nooit saai, en absoluut niet gedateerd (hoewel het tijd wordt voor herziening in het hoofdstuk dagboekschrijven want het internet / weblog was toen nog niet gangbaar.

Bernlef: Ontroeringen
essays, 1991. Vooral genoten van het essay over het verschil tussen de architect Speer en de totaalkunstenaar Kurt Schwitters (vooral de beschrijving van Kathedrale des erotischen Elends" was inspirerend). NAV van dit essay ben ik een week gepreoccupeerd geweest heb ik van lieverlee de verzamelde Schwitters-schrijfsels aangeschaft. Maar daarover later meer. Ik hou van Bernlef (Hendrik Jan Marsman) als fictieschrijver maar als essayist heeft ie misschien iets teveel spieren en gevoelens. Niettemin met veel plezier gelezen.

Botton, Alain de: The art of travel
The art of travel

This is a really amazing little book. It is not philosophy, not travel writing, not fiction but a mix of all of the above. You pick up these sentences or bits of information that stick in your mind and you find yourself using them in conversation, thinking and writing. It is very unobtrisive and written in a litterary style. I would recommend it to everybody.

Haar beste essay collectie tot nu toe. Ik geef toe, ik ben verslaafd.
Vaak zijn essays, vooral filosofische, gevoelsarm of erger nog: ze hebben dat als resultaat. Door overmatig gebruik van je intellectuele deel, verschrompelt je emotionele kant. Dat maakt me doorgaans stoffig, in mezelf gekeerd, depressief, groezelig, associaal. Op dat soort filosofische essays zou een health-warning moeten staan "dit boek -hoe briljant ook- kan uw gemoed ernstig aantasten". Maar niet met deze. Van dit boek krijg je zin in het leven, het is avontuurlijk als Robinson Crusoe en rauw als Larkins' poezie, en daartussenin is het heerlijk duizelen op verfijnde wijze.

«Wat maakt dit leven de moeite waard?» vroeg VPRO's Wim Kayzer aan 29 wetenschappers, filosofen en kunstenaars. De antwoorden vormden eerst de tv-serie «Van de schoonheid en de troost» en zijn nu door de geïnterviewden tot boek bewerkt. Volgens Patricia de Martelaere loopt er een wonderlijke lijn door de antwoorden van deze «grote geesten»
